DIY Handsewn Stationery for Mother's Day

I am sure I am not alone when I say that nothing brought me closer to my mother than becoming a mother myself. It was as though I suddenly reached a whole new level of respect and admiration for this amazing woman I had known and loved all my life!

This year I kept my Mom top of mind while working on some special ideas for Mother’s Day. This quick, easy, and inexpensive hand-sewn stationery is one of my favorites. After all, my Mom always loved getting handmade cards from me when I was a kid, so I know she’ll love getting them just as much now! Macaroni frames may have been the original DIY Mother’s Day gift, but now that you’re a little bit older and more able, it’s time graduate from macaroni gifts and give Mom a truly personal gift that is also handmade.

I used colored card stock, a needle, and embroidery floss for my cards–but you could easily add your own personal touch to a store bought card as well. Keep in mind Mom’s favorite colors and flowers when decorating – she will be touched that you remember the small details. Either way, I guarantee your Mom is going to smile.

  • Store bought greeting cards or colored card stock
  • Envelopes to fit card size
  • Cork board
  • Punching awl or sharp point like a nail or ice pick
  • Embroidery floss
  • Cross-stitch needle
  • Sharp scissors
  • Simple pattern you have created or found
  • Any additional embellishments you would like to add
  • Glue

Step 1: Trim greeting card or card stock and fold to desired shape and size.

Step 2: Place card on corkboard.

Step 3: Pierce design onto card with punching awl.

Step 4: Sew design through the holes using embroidery floss and a cross-stitch needle (the bigger stitch should be on the outer or visible side of the card).

Step 5: Knot ends of floss when complete.

Step 6: Add any additional embellishments with glue and let dry.
