How To: Throw a Fabulous At-Home Spa Day for Mom

Rather than taking mom out this holiday, set up the ultimate bonding experience with an at-home spa! Something homemade is an amazing way to show that you really care, and that you put a ton of effort into Mother’s Day. Plus, your mom will love getting pampered for a little while! Check out some of our favorite recipes, tricks, and products for the perfect Mother’s Day at-home spa.

1) Prepare your Stations

When you’re getting your day ready for mom, make sure that you have all of the materials that you’ll need for each cute little station you have planned. Try sticking to standard treatments that are easy to manage, such as hair, nails, and massages. You can get everything ready by setting up each room as a specific service station! That way, you won’t have to worry about one room being constantly in transition, or things getting too cramped.

The important thing to remember is that details are key! Spread out some candles, warm towels, music, flowers, and cocktails to give your mom the full experience. Also, remember to pre-book the people that will be helping you: manicurists, massage therapists, and hair stylists should be booked in advance, and far enough apart that each service doesn’t feel rushed.

2) Play Some Mood Music

Recreate the soothing spa sounds to really let mom wind down, and enjoy her day of pampering. Curate a selection of soothing nature and new age music, or pick a playlist on a music streaming service to play for as long as you need. Make sure you use clear speakers so the sounds just fade into the background; and keep the volume low and reasonable so mom doesn't get distracted.

3) Scent the Scene

Being at the spa is all about appealing to your senses. One of the best parts? The relaxing smells! Spas use essential oils like lavender, tea trea and eucalyptus to create a calmed, relaxed atmosphere. If your mom doesn't already have a  collection of oils, pick some up from your local grocery store for cheaper than a specialty store; Whole Foods has a selection of Aura Cacia oils, and their own 365 brand for purchase. Pick your favorite combo, and place some in a diffuser. If you don't have a diffuser, here's a quick tip to spread the scent: Apply a few drops each on some cotton balls, and scatter around where she will be hanging out. She'll never know the difference!

4) Provide Relaxing Drinks

Spas are known for their citrus-infused water, selection of tea, and fresh pressed juice. Since it's Mother's Day, let mom treat herself to whatever she wants! To create a more spa-like atmosphere, fill a giant water pitcher with lemon and orange slices (remove the peel first to prevent any bitter taste), plus some fresh mint leaves. You can also provide a couple tea bags and some hot water, if she's a tea drinker. If she's looking more to relax, have her favorite glass of wine waiting. It's her day!

5) Serve Tasty Small Bites

Mixing homemade delights with store-bought treats is a perfect way to show that you had a direct hand in preparation, without making things to hard on yourself! Most spas have light bites like trail mix and small cookies, which are a great option to spread out. We love these Lavender Vanilla Scones for a sweet, relaxing treat.

6) Add Special, Personalized Touches

Something as simple as remembering your mom’s favorite candle fragrance and lighting a few around the house will really make her day. Add to the atmosphere by setting out her favorite fluffy bathrobe, and if she doesn't have one, getting one monogrammed with her initials. Not only will it add to the spa experience, it makes for a fun gift she can use over and over.

7) Send Her Home with Some Spa Essentials

The pampering doesn't have to end just because mom left! Create her very on "swag bag" and fill it with some of her favorite treats and trinkets. It will be the gift that keeps on giving! We love throwing in some favorites from the spa; essential oils, scented candals, nail polish, hand cream, and even some treats from Cheryl's. It's the perfect way to show that your appreciation doesn’t stop after Mother’s Day. She’ll love that you thought ahead, and she’ll definitely be bragging about you to her friends!
