Mother's Day Chalkboard Crafts: DIY Frame, Tray & Mug for Mom

The chalkboard finish is on trend right now, quickly becoming the most popular DIY project all over Pinterest and the Internet. But what do you do when you want your DIY to last forever?

The solution is actually pretty simple; swap the chalk for white paint. Paint pens have a similar effect as chalk and last forever, allowing for this trend to be enjoyed long after Mother’s Day is over.

Below I have laid out all the steps you need to create a picture-perfect chalkboard inspired frame, but you can use the same supply chest to create three very different looks; some simple enough that a toddler can craft with supervision like the personalized comment mug, or even a father looking to add a personal touch to this special occasion by creating a breakfast in bed serving tray.

  • Black Acrylic paint
  • Foam Brush
  • White Acrylic paint pens
  • Pressed wood frame
  • Mod Podge
  • Crafting Paper
  • Plain breakfast tray (for the chalkboard tray)
  • Plain coffee mug (for the chalkboard mug)

For the frame:

Step 1: Remove the window from the frame and paint the frame black, then allow it to dry.

Step 2: Cut out the crafting paper and write a personal message in the window using the white paint pen, then allow the paint to dry.

Step 3: Mod Podge the crafting paper cut out by using the foam brush to apply a thin coat across the top and secure it to the frame.

Step 4: Once dry, replace the window frame and insert your picture.

For the mug: To create the personalized coffee mug, paint a caption bubble onto a white mug, and then write a personal message with the white paint pen.

For the tray: To create the handprint breakfast tray, paint the tray with black paint, once dry, trace each hand with the white paint pen and allow it to dry.
